Article summary

The article by Pearson has covered a lot of aspects when it comes to the importance of the infant ad toddlers’ years using the relationship-based model. The author profoundly looks at the kind of relationships that infants and toddlers are engaged in during those formative years and how it influences their lives. He says that some factors in a child’s life are influenced by the relationship he or she maintains while an infant or a toddler. Such factors include; the wellbeing of the child, competence, good developmental outcomes, and mental health.

The author acknowledges that the infant and toddler period (0-36 months) is the most critical human developmental life period. This is because there’s so much learning that happens within that age. Whatever the child learns at this age has a long-term effect not only on the child but also to the community and the world. The author also notes the relationship between communication and the child’s reaction and brain development. He states that the infant or toddler’s response from those surrounding them greatly impacts the child’s perception of things. He gives an example of two children in different situations.

In another situation, a child’s hands are slapped for trying to reach a forbidden cookie. The child, in this case, will become naturally defensive because of the way the mum responds. These synapses and pathways formed actively create a web of learning in the infant and toddler’s brain, making it crucial that those who relate with the kids at this age must be extra careful with what they teach the child.

Personal opinion

I would agree with the author about how crucial the infant and toddler years are from the article.  Most of the issues that adult human beings deal with, especially emotional and psychological problems, result from childhood experiences. For example, many violent people have a history of violent treatment in their formative years. Likewise, the brilliant and spiritually high people account for encouragement and warm treatment in their formative years.

The type of relationships that the infant and toddlers maintain, whether with the parents, fellow toddlers, the environment, is influential to the child’s attitude throughout their growth.
