How Technology promotes Loneliness

Description

How Technology promotes Loneliness

The use of technology has made life easier by influencing the way individuals communicate, think and learn. Ideally, using machines such as computers makes work easy because people interact and exchange information efficiently compared to the olden days where one needed to travel from one place to another to relay information. However, the technological use of communication gadgets harms society because it promotes loneliness that results from a communication breakdown; social platforms make individuals feel isolated and have prevented individuals from creating personal connections.

Firstly, the intense use of social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter has brought about communication breakdown among members of the same family who need to interact regularly to strengthen family ties. As a result, individuals of the same family fail to spend quality time socializing and having one on one conversation with their loved (Wilson, 2018). Individuals feel drawn to check on social media platforms lacking sufficient time to spend on their families.

Secondly, the use of social media makes individuals feel lonely because it harms human socialization. Heavy use of social media weighs down on an individual’s confidence, making people less interactive with one another, and bringing about social isolation. Moreover, children have become distant from their parents. After all, they feel like their parents do not have time for them because they lack time for face-to-face interaction makes them feel withdrawn from family bonds (Burholt, Windle, Gott  & Morgan, 2020). Loneliness caused by using social media makes people sink into depression and anxiety because they may not know how to deal with real-life situations.

Thirdly, social media weighs down on an individual’s ability to create personal connections. Social media platforms make people less tolerant with face to face confrontations. As a result, modern technological advancement destroys relationships making it hard for people to co-exist because they are not used to directly express their emotions to other people making one feel lonely and detached from reality. Individuals often fail to communicate and address other people’s emotional needs when using social media (Schlomann et al., 2020). It is easy to relate with one another during direct conversation to pave the way free flow of emotions. People suffer from depression, mental health issues that result from isolation.

In conclusion, the constant use of social media has both positive and negative impacts on an individual’s life. There are vast differences when people interact face to face compared to when people use social media platforms since people cannot entirely express themselves when using social media platforms leading to detachment and isolation. Family ties and bonds thrive on constant interactions that are hard to achieve through using social media. Social media platforms use scanty emotions when using social media platforms that are ineffective when using social media.
