Today, you are going to use Stellarium, a free planetarium program, to investigate what the sky looks like on different planets.


Go to the web and type and download the program. It works on Macs and PCs. Once you do that, go to the lower left of the program and you will see a number of panels. Go to the top one, which is the Location window (F6). Click on it and find San Mateo and click on it. You are now in San Mateo. Below the Location window, is the Date/time window (F5). Click on it and a window will appear to the right. The leftmost part of the window is the month, day, and year. The rightmost part is the time in 24 hour time. At the bottom left of the screen, you will see icons for constellation lines, stars, and the planets. Click on them to show them in the sky.

What constellations do other countries see in the sky? We see the constellation Orion, but what do the Koreans, Mayans, etc see? All countries see the same stars, however, different cultures have their own constellations and stories about the stars.

Set Stellarium for December 22, at 0 hr 0 min 0 sec, and FOV ~ 73o. Make sure that the stars, constellation lines, and deep sky objects are clicked. These icons are at the bottom of the screen. You want to position the sky so that Orion is in the middle, with Taurus to the upper right and Canis Major to the lower left. On the lower left side of the screen, go to the Sky and viewing options window (third icon down) and open it. Next, click on the Starlore icon. To the left of the panel, you will see lots of different cultures, with their own starlore. On the next page, is a table with 12 different cultures, along with Orion, Taurus, and Canis Major. Fill in the blanks under the constellations with what the different cultures called these constellations and/or stars. You will find that in some cultures, Orion or Taurus or Canis Major are not named. In that case, leave the space blank. You will also find, that some cultures will combine several
